The Freedom Tower

The Freedom Tower is an iconic part of Miami’s history.

The tower is located at the entrance to the Port of Miami, opposite Bayside and the American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat.

The tower was built in 1925 and was originally the headquarters of the newspaper The Miami News. The architects took inspiration from the La Giralda tower in Seville, Spain.

From 1962 to 1974 the Federal Government used the tower to receive refugees from Cuba.

The NEW WORLD Mural

Inside the Freedom Tower is the New World Mural.

As the Freedom Tower was closed from 1974 to 1987 the mural severely decayed.

In 1989 a group of artists faithfully restored the mural from black and white photographs.

The poem was composed by American poet Edwin Markham in 1925, it celebrates the discovery and naming of Florida in 1513.
